Angelina Jolie and Madonna on the Adoption trail

Keeping up with the Joneses, celebrity style.  In the week that Madonna began adoption proceedings for a second child from Malawi, there is gossip that Angelina Jolie is on the baby trail again. Jolie and Brad Pitt already have three adopted children plus three of their own, and Jolie has revealed they are considering India for their next addition to the family. A visit to an orphanage in Pune sparked off the latest interest, and Ms Jolie has shared her ambition with Slumdog Millionaire star Azharuddin Mohammed.

The coincidence with Madonna’s newest baby prowl is significant, though. Are the super-rich stars rivals in an adoption war? Madonna is due to attend a second malawi hearing on Friday to hear whether she can adopt three year old orphan Mercy James, whose teenage mother died in 2006.

Madonna’s adopted son David was born in Malawi and the star took him with her for a reunion with his natural father Yohane.  They had to talk through an interpreter as David now speaks only English.  The boy said he was missing his nanny, who left Madonna’s employment recently. So that’s the way celebrity adoption operates, then.

Update 3 April

After outcry from children’s charities around the world, the court in Malawi today refused the granting of custody of the child to Madonna.  This is despite a statement yesterday saying the government would back her second adoption bid.
