President Obama meets the Queen
Less than 24 hours into their visit, Michelle and Barack Obama have officially charmed us all. Living in London for most of my life I know that we Brits take most things in our stride. It takes a lot to impress us, but yesterday in a whirlwind schedule the President and First Lady found a place in the national heart. For me, their afternoon visit to the Queen was the best: it was obvious that the President had looked forward to the meeting for a long time. He managed to ignore the Duke’s trademark gaffe and continue pleasant conversation with the boss. In the photos Philip looks like a garden gnome lurking on the edgeof the photo in search of more mischief, while the others just look stunning. For the first meeting the Queen was wearing pearls (of course), a tailored pink dress with inverted pleats, teamed with black patent shoes and bag. Mrs Obama wore a full length black silk coat by Jason Wu, cream and black dress by Isabel Toled, and later she changed the coat for a cardigan by Azzedine Alaia. Around her neck she wore a double row pearl necklace – a reflection of the Queen’s trademark accessory. The Obamas had been reading up on etiquette in advance, and it paid off. Michelle gave a little curtsey to the queen, Barack inclined his head to the monarch and the Queen was clearly impressed with the celebrity couple.
