Hollie Steel is a finalist in Britains Got Talent
Another great discovery at Britain’s Got talent is 10 year-old Hollie Steel. I tuned in for the first time last night and caught Hollie’s audition. This skinny little girl appeared in a skimpy lilac tutu and danced a few ballet steps for the first few bars. Then she stopped in the middle of the stage and gave a powerful rendition of “I could have danced all night” from My Fair Lady. She certainly has a beautiful voice – escpecially at the final trill. But a few things jarred with me. First, her diction. It was pure 1950s received pronunciation. I know accents disappear whenwe sing but a littel girl from Accrington is hardly going to say “daaarnced” in that way. Her voice coach has given her a voice that is out of kilter with her personality. Second, why was she dressed in such a funny little outfit? her parents are obviously pushing her along in this quest – and that’s a concern – so why did they not find a more becoming outfit?
When Hollie Steel appears in the Britain’s Got Talent final I hope her personality is allowed to shine through. She will sound even better for it.
