OMG – Michelle touched the Queen!

Michelle Obama hugs The Queen
Only the female half of the world’s favourite celebrity couple could breach Royal protocol in this way and get away with it.  At the Buckingham Palace cocktail party, Mrs Obama put her arm round the Queen and – shock – the Queen reciprocated!

After less than two hours Mrs Obama seems to have made a connection with Her Majesty that normally take many months to achieve.  In a reign of 57 years the Queen has seen twelve US Presidents come and go, but she strives to stay in touch with the mood of the people since the Royal Family misjudged feelings following Princess Diana’s death.  So maybe her Royal Highness was reflecting the Obamania that is affecting the rest of us Brits.  Their first meeting was at teatime in the Royal Family’s private apartments, where they exchanged gifts: an iPod from the Obamas and a framed photo of herself from the Queen. The action then moved to a 6pm cocktail party, where they joined the other G20 leaders and their spouses. It was at this party that Michelle, who was chatting happily with the Queen, and the hug came just before she was due to leave for the G20 dinner at Downing Street. President Obama and his wife are both 6 foot +, whereas the Queen’s height is around 5 feet 2″.  The monarch seems to have touched Michelle’s back, maybe remarking on the height difference, and Michelle returned the contact, technically breaching etiquette.  Let’s be frank, she looks like the perfect Granny and the Queen will be 83 on the 21st of April. Not surprising that a fan would want to embrace her!  Michelle seems to have come through the incident with her reputation intact – the Queen actually hugged her back.  I would not be surprised if she now considers a visit to the States to the White House.  Her Majesty’s parting words to Michelle Obama were “Now that we’ve met, let’s stay in touch”. Compliment indeed….
