Sophie Dahl finally made the official announcement that she is engaged to musician
Jamie Cullum’. After weeks of speculation, six-foot tall Sophie said she will marry
Jamie Cullum next year. She coyly admitted on last night’s ‘Friday Night with Jonathan Ross’ celebrity chat show that their nuptials are official. Then this morning she was interviewed in the Daily Telegraph, referring to
Jamie Cullum as her fiancé. The Telegraph interview described her perfect weekend, and Sophie mentioned that she walks around London unnoticed because “I’m usually in jeans, ballet shoes and a jumper stolen from Jamie”. I can understand why she’s wearing ballet shoes as the flat heels help reduce the height difference between Dahl and her diminutive boyfriend – sorry, Fiancé. But I find it hard to believe that
Sophie Dahl could fit into
Jamie Cullum’s teeny clothes.

Sophie and Jamie need a good camera angle
Trouble is, it really does not look right! Notice in the first photo how
Jamie Cullum has slipped his hand into Sophie’s? The conventional way is for the woman to hold the man’s hand, so that his would show at the front in a photograph like this. Their way of handholding is a bit too mother-child for my taste.
In the second picture, taken at the Louis Vuitton show during London Fashion Week in October, the couple have stood at the right angle so they appear at a similar height. As long as the photo is not full length, the image is maintained.
Sophie towers above Jamie at the London Film Festival
But in this third picture the illusion. Not only does Sophie look much taller, she even has
her arm around Jamie’s shoulder!! Sophie wore completely flat heeled shoes on this occasion, but to no avail. She sto0ped – a posture habit she seems to have adopted permanently – she even bent one knee in an effort to appear smaller, but the camera (unfortunately for Sophie) never lies when you are trying to defy nature.
Height differences are often magnified in photographs, as I always think when I see pix of myself. I have the opposite problem, being slightly vertically challenged. It never fails to surprise me that I look shorter than everyone else, even after all these years. Maybe I am more suited to marry Jamie?
The happy couple are spending plenty of time together, and Sophie even sang some backing tracks on Jamie Cullum’s latest album. Sophie and Jamie have been dating since April 2007, shortly after both had gone through breakups with former celebrity lovers. They share plenty of interests and of course Sophie is regularly seen at Jamie’s London concert dates. Last month at the Hard Rock Cafe Love, Cullum dedicated a song to his fiancée – Ain’t Gonna Let You Down – and he revealed, “This is the first love song I’ve ever written without a joke in it. I wonder why.”
Let us hope the path of true love runs smoothly for the engaged celebrities, in spite of the height difference.

As a six foot tall women myself, lay off the height jokes seriously! Yes Jamie is short for the average male and Sophie is tall for the average woman, but frankly if the heights were reversed no one would even being blinking an eye. It is incredibly shallow to judge a couple and call their relationship mother-son like simply because of a noticeable height difference. Its the 21st century, and if tall girls only dated guys taller than us, then we’d be missing out on some great guys. Grow up Ms. Vertically Challenged.
